Taking the Piste

In 2025 British Fencing changed their rules banning trans women from competing in the women’s category, they were unfortunately trailblazers as this decision was later mirrored by both the international governing body of fencing (The FIE) and the International Olympic Committee. My project is a deeply personal exploration of what it means to be a trans woman in sports through the lens of my own experience on the GBR Fencing team and now feeling unwanted in sport.

I started out wanting to subvert the idea of an anonymous plain white kit and so I reworked old fencing jackets transforming them into an elegant, pleated dress which shifts from a brilliant white to deep crimson flowing forms. The dress is also complete with wings which move and flow with fencing movement and deliberately highlight the visibility of trans people.
