Essays for the Gooniverse is a call to action: a re-engineering of essays to allow them to thrive in a space in which they struggle to survive. The architecture of short-form video hosting applications, such as TikTok or Instagram Reels, does not facilitate sequential points and citations. It requires three-second hooks and ‘frictionless’ scripts. Nothing is allowed to break the opioidic warm hug induced by the gushing flow of tailored content, and so the essay, as a medium, must adapt; it must hide in plain sight, each point existing as a video in its own right while functioning as a cog in a larger machine of interconnected points. The videos on display enact this process. I have re-engineered an essay on how digital media reshape truth, culture, and sociality. The essay is told through the persona of the ‘Goon Guide’, a digital transient who is tasked with helping the viewer wade through the complexity of the digital bog.
