"Hirz (حرز): a fortified place, refuge, or protective amulet.
This project explores the human need for safety, protection, and belonging. Drawing on both subcultural fashion that challenges the status quo and my traditional Arab heritage, Hirz presents a series of armour-like jewellery garments. These pieces are designed to sit heavily on the body, using weight and material presence to create a sense of grounding, containment, and security.
Accompanying the work are scenes from my London DIY punx collective Infilāt (انفلات)- meaning “to break away” capturing moments of release, resistance, and collective identity.
Jewellery has long functioned as protection, from ancient Egyptian amulets to its continued use within subcultures such as punk, goth, and metal. My own relationship to jewellery is deeply personal and shaped by both cultural inheritance and subcultural affiliation- two identities that rarely seem to intersect.
Through Hirz, I explore a space where these influences converge, held together by shared values of resilience, warmth, resistance, and belonging.
