Worn to Wear

Kira Tenk

Worn to Wear is a collection of garments that explores a visible appreciation for authentic worn value. Within the denim industry, products are often considered a higher market value based on the extent of their processing—traditional techniques such as stonewashing and manual abrasion artificially replicate wear. These processes manufacture a sense of character, creating desirable identities within garments, most commonly jeans. In contrast, this project considers authentic worn value as something personal: a material’s adaptation to the behaviours of its wearer. Fading, fraying, and tearing become markers of individual experience, each unique to a specific life lived in the garment. Worn to Wear intervenes in this cycle by intercepting discarded denim heading for landfill due to extensive “defects” of wear. Rather than restoring these imperfections, the collection employs a range of textile techniques to highlight and reframe them. The damage is not repaired, but elevated; transformed into a defining feature that celebrates the garment’s history rather than erasing it.
