Plush Dependency

Jiayi Gu

When you are children, being attached to plush items is allowed and seen as normal. But as they grow up, they are told to give up these “childish” things to become mature adults. Because of this, this kind of attachment is often hidden or disappears from public life. This project offers a way to rethink the role of plush dependency today.

In this project, I try to challenge this idea and bring “adult attachment to plush items” back into public space, so it can be seen and understood. I use costume as the main medium, because it is close to the body. I combine plush materials with clothing and design multifunctional products. They can be worn as part of an outfit or removed and used separately. Through this, I hope that it helps people see that this kind of dependency is not unusual.
