Play: De-Colonial Subversion and Emotional Refuge

Harsheen Kaur

This project explores ‘play’ as a decolonial mechanism deeply embedded in practices across the global south. More specifically focusing on the impact of the British Raj on India’s design language. Colonisation meant indigenous furniture that typically allowed for freedom of movement was quickly replaced with high-backed chairs and large, extending tables. The home became an extension of control and another means of controlling the civilian body. This piece subverts an object traditionally extended for formality, instead expanding it to make room for refuge and rest. A hand-knotted net, inspired by the Indian charpoy, Victorian lacework and the suspended landscape of indoor soft play, sits between both halves.
