“Pilot.” “Ballet dancing giraffe.” “Equestrian.” “Soldier.” “Author.” “Ballerina.” If these are the futures we saw for ourselves, why are they not our reality? Where along the way did these ideals disappear? Is it ever possible to return to that place? “What We Wanted to Be” hones in on the wonderfully naive dreams of childhood, bringing them forwards into our adult lives. The aim: helping inderviduals feel connected to their younger selves by reflecting on the careers they saw for themselves as children. This is done through an interview – creation – feedback loop, closing only after said indervidual receives a bespoke object, inspired by the career they idealised in childhood, and the personal reasoning behind it. The process’ nature allows inderviduals to reflect on their younger selves both during (in discussions with the designer) and after it is complete (when they interact with their object regularly). Thus, establishing both the creation of the object and the process itself as designed things.
