Where The Ashes Gather (A Living Archive of Indian Identity)

‘Where The Ashes Gather’ is a speculative, generative digital museum serving as a living archive for Indian identity. It allows users to explore and create spaces that reflect their unique ethnic identities within a broader cultural landscape.
Contemporary India faces a flattening of its cultural depth due to globalization and nationalism, which often reduce complex, syncretic history into homogenized commodities or exclusionary narratives. ‘Ashes’ represents the neglected rituals, traditions, and the rich ethnic plurality of the Indian experience. These elements gather within this digital realm, not to be restored to a static past, but to be reimagined for the present.
This project creates an alternative world where culture is expressed and evolved by the community itself. By documenting personal rituals, objects, and traditions, users transform cultural knowledge into something dynamic and experiential. This digital space offers a platform for the Indian community to honor, preserve, and develop their heritage in a way that remains authentic to their lived realities.
